Tablas de Daimiel from Ciudad Real
Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park is a wetland on the Guadiana and Cigüela rivers, outside Daimiel, with boardwalks over the water and bird hides. There is no public transport to the visitor centre, and the landscape changes a lot depending on how much water there is that year.
How to get there
- Ciudad Real
- Ciudad Real is one of the largest provinces in Spain and its towns are far apart: going from Puertollano to Alcázar de San Juan means crossing half the province. Trains link some pairs well but not all, and buses between the main towns are scarce. The most requested internal trips are from the towns to the high-speed stations of Ciudad Real and Puertollano and to each area's hospital.

The three itineraries
- La Isla del Pan: A loop across several islands on the eastern shore of the Tablas, through the tamarisk wood.
- La Laguna Permanente: Leads to a lagoon with hides from which waterbirds can be seen depending on the time of year.
- La Torre de Prado Ancho: Skirts the central tablas, with four wildlife hides along the way.
How to get there
From Ciudad Real on the N-420 and from Manzanares on the N-430 you reach Daimiel; from there, eleven kilometres of paved road to the visitor centre, past the Molemocho mill. The secondary access leaves from Villarrubia de los Ojos. One itinerary is wheelchair-accessible.
The Ojos del Guadiana are the river's springs, about twelve kilometres upstream of the Tablas in the municipality of Villarrubia de los Ojos; the car can stop there on the way in or out.

When demand peaks
- Birds at Las Tablas de Daimiel (autumn to spring): When the wetland has water, the colder months bring waterfowl and more visitors to the national park, especially at weekends. It pays to arrive early, which is when the hides are at their best.
