The west — the capital, the Campo de Calatrava and Puertollano — revolves around high-speed rail to Madrid and Andalusia; the east — Alcázar de San Juan, Tomelloso, Valdepeñas — is wine-growing La Mancha, with its own rail junction at Alcázar and the A-4 as the main road north and south.
The capital and the towns of the old Order of Calatrava lands make up the most populated area in the west of the province. Miguelturra is joined to Ciudad Real, and Almagro and Bolaños are a few kilometres away: most trips to the high-speed station, the General Hospital and the provincial offices start here.
Daimiel and Villarrubia de los Ojos lie on either side of Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park, on the Guadiana plain. They are farming towns that rely on Ciudad Real for the hospital and the AVE, and they receive park visitors who have no public transport to get there.
Puertollano is the province's industrial city, with its petrochemical complex, and the main town of the hilly south that runs down to the Alcudia valley and the Sierra Madrona. It has its own hospital and high-speed station, so many trips connect with trains to Madrid or to Córdoba and Seville.
The north-east of the province is the La Mancha of the Campo de Criptana windmills, the wineries of Tomelloso and Socuéllamos and the rail junction at Alcázar de San Juan. Mancha Centro Hospital, in Alcázar, serves much of the area, and Argamasilla de Alba is the gateway to the Lagunas de Ruidera.
The centre and south of La Mancha in Ciudad Real line up along the A-4: Manzanares, where it crosses the A-43, and Valdepeñas, a wine town with its own designation of origin. La Solana lies to the east, towards the Campo de Montiel. Valdepeñas has a hospital and a conventional railway station, and for the AVE people go to Ciudad Real.

Ciudad Real has what almost no other Castilla-La Mancha capital has: an AVE that reaches Atocha in under an hour. The problem is the rest of the way: from Atocha to T4 you change to Cercanías C-1 or C-10 via Chamartín, or to the metro with another change, and the whole trip from your front door easily passes two and a half hours. By road it is {{ruta:ciudad-real-a-aeropuerto-madrid-barajas:km}} along the A-41 and the A-4, about {{ruta:ciudad-real-a-aeropuerto-madrid-barajas:min}} without traffic, round Madrid on the M-40 or M-50. For a flight boarding before nine in the morning, before the first AVE has arrived, the transfer with a driver from {{ruta:ciudad-real-a-aeropuerto-madrid-barajas:precio}} is the only door-to-door option; from Puertollano it is {{ruta:puertollano-a-aeropuerto-madrid-barajas:km}} and from {{ruta:puertollano-a-aeropuerto-madrid-barajas:precio}}.
Ciudad Real is the only province in Castilla-La Mancha with two high-speed stations, Ciudad Real and Puertollano, both on the Madrid–Seville line: Atocha is under an hour from Ciudad Real and a little more from Puertollano, and Córdoba is barely an hour to the south. What the province lacks is public transport that reaches those stations in time for the first train: from Daimiel it is {{ruta:daimiel-a-estacion-ave-ciudad-real:km}}, from Almagro {{ruta:almagro-a-estacion-ave-ciudad-real:km}}, from Valdepeñas {{ruta:valdepenas-a-estacion-ave-ciudad-real:km}} and from Alcázar de San Juan {{ruta:alcazar-de-san-juan-a-estacion-ave-ciudad-real:km}}, and the morning bus arrives after the seven o'clock Avant has left. That is why the transfer to the station, keyed to the train time, is the usual way to connect, from {{ruta:daimiel-a-estacion-ave-ciudad-real:precio}} from Daimiel.

Almagro is {{ruta:ciudad-real-a-corral-de-comedias-almagro:km}} from Ciudad Real and has trains and buses, but performances at the Corral de Comedias and at the July Classical Theatre Festival end at night, when no bus is left to get back. Las Tablas de Daimiel, {{ruta:ciudad-real-a-tablas-de-daimiel:km}} from the capital, have no public transport to the visitor centre; the Lagunas de Ruidera, {{ruta:tomelloso-a-lagunas-de-ruidera:km}} from Tomelloso, have none either, and in summer parking runs short from mid-morning; and Calatrava la Nueva crowns a hill reached only by a narrow road. For all four, the way to go without your own car is the same: a transfer with the return booked at the same time as the outbound, because there are no taxis waiting there to improvise with.
