Almagro and its festival, Las Tablas de Daimiel, Ruidera and Calatrava la Nueva: how to visit them without your own car

Almagro is 27 km from Ciudad Real and has trains and buses, but performances at the Corral de Comedias and at the July Classical Theatre Festival end at night, when no bus is left to get back. Las Tablas de Daimiel, 41 km from the capital, have no public transport to the visitor centre; the Lagunas de Ruidera, 44 km from Tomelloso, have none either, and in summer parking runs short from mid-morning; and Calatrava la Nueva crowns a hill reached only by a narrow road. For all four, the way to go without your own car is the same: a transfer with the return booked at the same time as the outbound, because there are no taxis waiting there to improvise with. From Ciudad Real to the Corral de Comedias, from 43,31 €.

How do you get to the Corral de Comedias and the Almagro festival?

The Corral de Comedias in Almagro, on the Plaza Mayor, is a seventeenth-century theatre still in use, and every July it is the heart of the International Classical Theatre Festival, which also fills the Hospital de San Juan, the municipal theatre and other venues around the town. Almagro is 27 km from Ciudad Real, about 24 min, and has a conventional railway station on the line from Ciudad Real to Puertollano via Manzanares, plus a bus from the capital. To reach an afternoon performance, either will do.

The problem is getting back. The festival's night performances start at ten or eleven, because of the heat, and finish after midnight; at that hour there is no train or bus to Ciudad Real, and Almagro's accommodation sells out weeks ahead, so much of the audience sleeps in the capital. During the festival, the return transfer is booked for the time the performance ends, not a rough hour: the driver waits at the exit, and the Plaza Mayor, closed to traffic on those days, has its pickup points in the surrounding streets. Anyone coming from Madrid can combine the AVE to Ciudad Real with the transfer to Almagro, 27 km, and go back the next day.

Is there transport to Las Tablas de Daimiel?

No. Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park is a wetland on the Guadiana and Cigüela rivers outside Daimiel, with boardwalks over the water, bird hides and a visitor centre, and no regular bus line reaches it: the bus stops in Daimiel and the visitor centre is several kilometres from the town along a local road. From Ciudad Real it is 41 km and about 44 min; from Daimiel itself it is a few kilometres along a local road.

The park changes a great deal depending on how much water there is that year, and the best time for birds is autumn to spring, early in the morning, when the hides are at their best. For a visit without a car, the practical thing is to book the outbound trip for opening time and the return two or three hours later, which is what the signposted trails take; the visitor centre publishes its hours on the National Parks agency website and they are worth checking, because they vary by season and some trails close when the water level rises.

How do you reach the Lagunas de Ruidera and where do you park?

The Lagunas de Ruidera are a natural park of fifteen chained lakes on the upper Guadiana, split between the provinces of Ciudad Real and Albacete, and La Mancha's "inland beach". They are reached from Argamasilla de Alba and Tomelloso along the road up the valley, through the village of Ruidera; from Tomelloso it is 44 km, from Ciudad Real 115 km and from Manzanares 61 km. There is no public transport to the lakes.

At July and August weekends the bathing lakes (La Colgada, Del Rey, La Lengua) fill with people from the whole area and parking by the water runs short from mid-morning; the regional government regulates access and bathing in some areas in high season. Going with a driver has a concrete advantage here: you are dropped at the chosen lake without hunting for a space and collected at the agreed time, and nobody has to drive back after a day in the sun. Outside summer the park is a quiet walk among waterfalls and the Cueva de Montesinos, with the return booked just the same, because Ruidera has no taxis on call either.

What is particular about Calatrava la Nueva?

The castle-convent of Calatrava la Nueva, seat of the Order of Calatrava from the thirteenth century, crowns a hill in the municipality of Aldea del Rey, south of Almagro, facing Salvatierra castle. It is one of the most impressive medieval sites in Castile and one of the least accessible: the final climb is a steep, narrow road with stretches of medieval paving, and the nearest bus stop is in Aldea del Rey or Calzada de Calatrava, kilometres from the castle. From Almagro it is 34 km and from Ciudad Real 43 km.

The visit combines well with Almagro on the same day: the castle in the morning, when the light falls on the façade, and Almagro in the afternoon, with the Corral de Comedias, the National Theatre Museum and the Plaza Mayor. With a driver, the Ciudad Real–Calatrava la Nueva–Almagro–Ciudad Real round is booked as one service with stops; the castle's opening hours are published by the regional government and change between winter and summer. Near the capital, the Alarcos Archaeological Park, a few kilometres from the city centre above the Guadiana, is the other short visit with no bus.

How do you organise a trip from Madrid without a car?

The AVE reaches Ciudad Real in under an hour from Atocha, and everything else starts from the station. A typical weekend: Friday, an afternoon AVE and transfer to Almagro for a festival performance; Saturday, Calatrava la Nueva in the morning and back to Almagro or Ciudad Real; Sunday, Las Tablas de Daimiel early and an afternoon AVE back to Madrid. Each leg has its route page with the "from" fare and the calculator gives the exact price per service; they are booked with the time of each performance, opening or train, and the return always at the same time as the outbound.

What does not work is arriving in Almagro or Daimiel and looking for a taxi in the street for Las Tablas or the lakes: they are towns of around twenty thousand people with no taxi ranks staffed at all hours, and at the park or the lake there is nobody. The province page says it plainly: for Las Tablas de Daimiel, Ruidera or Calatrava la Nueva, book the return too. The rest, the theatre, the wetland and the lakes, take care of themselves.
