Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park is a wetland on the Guadiana and Cigüela rivers, outside Daimiel, with boardwalks over the water and bird hides. There is no public transport to the visitor centre, and the landscape changes a lot depending on how much water there is that year.

Daimiel and Villarrubia de los Ojos lie on either side of Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park, on the Guadiana plain. They are farming towns that rely on Ciudad Real for the hospital and the AVE, and they receive park visitors who have no public transport to get there.

When demand peaks

• Birds at Las Tablas de Daimiel (autumn to spring): When the wetland has water, the colder months bring waterfowl and more visitors to the national park, especially at weekends. It pays to arrive early, which is when the hides are at their best.

Tip: If you are going to the Almagro festival, say when the performance ends: pickup is set for when you come out, not for a rough time.
