Madrid from Ciudad Real: IFEMA, Parque Warner, concerts and matches, the Estación Sur and the hospitals
Ciudad Real province reaches Madrid along the A-4, which enters from the south, or by AVE and Avant to Atocha from Ciudad Real and Puertollano. By road, Ciudad Real city is about 155 min from IFEMA, with transfers from 259,34 €, and 201 km from the Estación Sur at Méndez Álvaro, from 245,42 €. Parque Warner sits right by the A-4 itself, before you reach the city; for the park, the stadiums and the hospitals, each destination page calculates the price from each town. The AVE wins for anyone travelling alone, light and back by day; a car with a driver suits families, patients, groups and small-hours returns, with the price fixed before booking.

What changes depending on whether you leave from Ciudad Real, Puertollano or wine-country La Mancha?
The province has two very different ways of getting to Madrid. The west, with Ciudad Real city, Miguelturra, Almagro and Puertollano, lives close to high-speed rail: Ciudad Real and Puertollano stations have AVE and Avant shuttles that drop you at Atocha, and for a day trip with little luggage that is the fastest option. The east, with Alcázar de San Juan, Tomelloso, Socuéllamos and Campo de Criptana, has no high-speed rail: the conventional train from the Alcázar junction takes longer and the bus goes up the A-4. And the centre and south, with Manzanares, Valdepeñas and La Solana, lie on the A-4, with conventional trains and scheduled buses to Madrid. None of the five destinations in this guide is at Atocha, so in nearly every case you have to add another trip within Madrid to the train.
By road, the capital goes up the A-41 to Puerto Lápice and joins the A-4 there, the same motorway that serves Valdepeñas and Manzanares; Alcázar and Tomelloso take the autovía de los Viñedos to Madridejos or go via Quintanar de la Orden towards the N-301. All of them end up entering Madrid from the south, and from there the destinations spread out: Parque Warner and 12 de Octubre hospital are on the way, the Estación Sur at Méndez Álvaro very close to the entrance, and IFEMA, the Metropolitano stadium and the northern hospitals at the far end, along the M-40 or M-50. That geography explains almost every decision in this guide: what lies to the south is easy to reach by car, and what lies to the north penalises anyone arriving at Atocha by train with luggage or in a hurry.
When does the car pay off and when the AVE for a trade fair at IFEMA from the province?
For someone leaving Ciudad Real or Puertollano, going alone to visit a fair and returning the same day before the last trains, the AVE to Atocha and the metro to the venue are usually enough. The calculation changes in three cases. The first is leaving from eastern La Mancha, where there is no high-speed rail: from Tomelloso to IFEMA it is 192 km by road, and the car avoids going to Ciudad Real or Alcázar first to catch a train. The second is travelling as a group: three or four people from a cooperative or a business pay a single price per vehicle. The third is an exhibitor's timetable, setting up early and breaking down late, when the train no longer fits. For everything else around a fair, such as accreditation or equipment, the province's guide on IFEMA goes into detail.
IFEMA does not only host trade fairs. The venue also holds shows open to the public, competitions, exams and concerts, and families and groups of friends from the province who are not travelling for work go to them. For those trips the rule is the same as for a concert: the hard part is the return, because the venue empties all at once and the last AVE to Ciudad Real does not wait. With the pickup booked at the hall door for the exit time, and adjusted with a message if the event runs on, you go home to sleep. From Valdepeñas or Manzanares, the A-4 entry leads first to the south of Madrid and means driving the M-40 to the north-east, a stretch that varies greatly with the time of day and is taken into account when setting the pickup.
Why is Parque Warner the most convenient Madrid destination from the A-4?
Parque Warner is in San Martín de la Vega, south-east of Madrid, and you get there by leaving the A-4 near Pinto, before entering the city. For a family from Valdepeñas, Manzanares, Daimiel or Ciudad Real that means the park is on the very motorway used to go up to Madrid, without crossing the M-40. By train the trip is something else: AVE or conventional train into Madrid and then another journey back south, with small children, pushchairs and backpacks, to reach a place you had passed on the motorway. In your own car, the park's car park is paid and leaving at closing time happens at the same moment as for every other visitor. There is no published route from each Ciudad Real town to the park: the Parque Warner page calculates the price from the pickup address.
The longest part of the day is the return. From the park to Puertollano or Tomelloso there are many kilometres of A-4 at night, after hours of queues and rides, and that is the moment when nobody should drive drowsy. With a driver, outbound and return go in the same booking, with the return pickup set for closing time. When booking you give the children's ages and heights, because traffic rules require a restraint suited to each minor's height, and whether you have pushchairs, so the vehicle assigned has room. If two families travel together, the per-vehicle price is shared. On peak-season weekends and at Christmas it is worth booking early, because everyone leaves the park at once and demand for the return piles up on those dates.
How do you get back to the province from a concert or match that ends in the small hours?
Big concerts and evening matches are held at the Bernabéu, the Metropolitano stadium, the arena on Avenida de Felipe II or IFEMA, and they end when there is no AVE south or scheduled bus to Ciudad Real or Valdepeñas left until the next morning. The options are well known: a hotel in Madrid, your own car with a small-hours drive down the A-4 after hours on your feet, or a booked return. Your own car adds parking far from the stadium and the low-emission zones Madrid applies, whose conditions by vehicle label the City Council publishes on its website. From Alcázar de San Juan, central Madrid is 155 km away, a distance that weighs far more in the small hours than by day.
A booked return is organised around the pickup point. When a stadium empties the police close the access roads and the driver cannot reach the gate, so a specific junction a few streets away is set, outside the closed perimeter, and the driver waits there. If the match goes to extra time or the concert runs on, a message moves the time. A group of four friends from Miguelturra or Puertollano pays a single price per vehicle, which usually works out better than two cars plus parking and fuel. From Manzanares, central Madrid is 177 km away, and the events page calculates the price from each venue. What does not work is trying to find a free car as the crowd leaves: thousands of people are looking for the same thing at once.
What role does the Estación Sur at Méndez Álvaro play for travellers from Ciudad Real?
The Estación Sur is the arrival point for the bus lines linking Madrid with Ciudad Real and for those running down the A-4 towards the south, stopping at Manzanares and Valdepeñas. For anyone without an AVE station nearby or who prefers the bus, it is the gateway to Madrid, with metro line 6 and commuter trains next door. It is also the terminal for long-distance coaches to other regions and to Portugal, and many of them leave and arrive in the small hours, exactly when there are no trains at Ciudad Real or Puertollano. From Puertollano to the Estación Sur it is 239 km; from Valdepeñas, 201 km, in both cases entering on the A-4 without crossing the city, because Méndez Álvaro is very close to the southern entrance.
A transfer to the Estación Sur makes sense for connecting with a long-distance coach that leaves before the first train or bus from your town, or when travelling with large suitcases. It works the same way in reverse: a student returning from another region on a night coach, or a relative arriving at Méndez Álvaro before dawn who has to carry on to La Solana or Bolaños de Calatrava, meets the driver at the agreed exit of the station, which has several. Someone else can make the booking, in the traveller's name and with their phone number, and if the coach is late the pickup is adjusted with a message. If the traveller is arriving by train rather than long-distance coach, the logical meeting point is Atocha or Chamartín, not the Estación Sur.
How do you plan an appointment at a Madrid hospital from Ciudad Real, and what does a car with a driver not cover?
Each area of the province has its hospital, the General in Ciudad Real, Mancha Centro in Alcázar, Santa Bárbara in Puertollano and Valdepeñas's, and for some specialities patients are referred to Ciudad Real or Madrid, on top of appointments with insurers and private clinics. Among the Madrid hospitals, 12 de Octubre, on Avenida de Córdoba, sits at the same southern entrance the A-4 arrives at, and is the easiest to reach by road from the province. La Paz, Ramón y Cajal, Gregorio Marañón or the Fundación Jiménez Díaz mean crossing or skirting Madrid, and from Atocha another trip by metro or commuter train. For an older person from Tomelloso or Argamasilla de Alba with a first-thing appointment, that means leaving before dawn. The hospitals page calculates the price from the starting town to the specific hospital.
The transfer is booked as outbound, wait and return: pickup at home with a margin for the rush-hour entry into Madrid, arrival at the outpatient building you specify, and a wait during the appointment or a pickup at a time agreed before setting off. The price is fixed when booking and a companion does not change it as long as they fit in the vehicle; a son or daughter in another city can make the booking, with the traveller's phone number. What this service does not do is replace medical transport: it carries no medical staff or equipment, and if the patient has to travel lying down, with oxygen or under supervision, the transport is prescribed by the doctor and organised by SESCAM. For a wheelchair that does not fold there is an adapted vehicle, requested in advance with the type of chair.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a car with a driver from Ciudad Real to Madrid's Estación Sur cost?
The published starting price is 245,42 € per vehicle. The calculator gives the exact amount with the pickup address, date and time, and if there are several of you the price is shared, because it is not per person.
Do you have to enter Madrid to get to Parque Warner from Valdepeñas?
No. The park is in San Martín de la Vega and you get there by leaving the A-4 before the city. The Parque Warner page calculates the price from your address, and when booking you give the children's ages and the seats needed.
From Tomelloso, is the train or the car better for IFEMA?
Tomelloso has no high-speed rail, so the train means first getting to another station. By road it is 192 km to the venue gate, and if several of you travel the per-vehicle price is shared.
What happens if the concert ends later than planned?
You send a message and the pickup is adjusted at the agreed junction, outside the traffic closure. The return has to be booked beforehand: there is no way to improvise it as the crowd leaves.
Does a car with a driver replace the ambulance for a check-up at 12 de Octubre?
No. It is for people who can travel seated and without care. If the patient needs assistance, oxygen or to lie down, medical transport is prescribed by the doctor and organised by SESCAM.
