Studying at UCLM in Ciudad Real: getting there from Barajas by high-speed train or transfer
Ciudad Real is under an hour from Madrid by high-speed rail: from Barajas take the C1 commuter train to Atocha and then the AVE or Avant to Ciudad Real, which takes about fifty-five minutes. The station is a walk from the campus. If you arrive with a lot of luggage or late, a pre-booked transfer covers the 220 km by road at a fixed price. UCLM's general academic year starts on 1 September 2026; at the Faculty of Chemical Sciences and Technologies the welcome days are on the 2nd and 3rd.

Which dates matter in Ciudad Real?
For 2026-2027 UCLM sets an undergraduate first semester from 1 September to 22 January and a second from 26 January to 4 June, and each faculty sets its own within that. The Chemistry degree calendar in Ciudad Real, for example, schedules welcome days on 2 and 3 September 2026 and starts its second semester on 2 February 2027, a week after the general one. Before you book your flight, check your faculty's calendar on the university website.
For exchange students arriving for the second semester, arrival week usually falls at the end of January or early February, right in the middle of everyone else's first-semester exams. Halls are busy and classmates are studying: it is a good idea to agree in advance what time someone will be there to hand you the key.
How do you combine the flight with the high-speed train to Ciudad Real?
The C1 commuter train leaves Terminal 4 for Atocha; Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are connected to T4 by a free bus. At Atocha you change from the commuter station to the high-speed station, Puerta de Atocha, a walk that takes a good fifteen minutes with luggage. Trains to Ciudad Real are those on the Andalusia line: AVE, Avant and Alvia, stopping at Ciudad Real and, many of them, at Puertollano.
According to Renfe's timetables of 2 November 2026, the journey from Atocha to Ciudad Real takes between fifty-three minutes and an hour, with departures from early morning. Andalusia-line trains are very full on Friday and Sunday afternoons, and in September even more so: with your ticket bought in advance there are no surprises; buying it at the station, there may only be a seat on a train two hours later.
When does a road transfer make sense?
The train is quick between stations, but the whole journey has four parts: terminal, commuter train, change at Atocha and high-speed train, plus the last stretch to your residence. With two large suitcases and a backpack, every part counts. A pre-booked transfer collects you at the terminal and drops you at the door, in about 160 min on the motorway, and the car from Ciudad Real starts at 272,91 € at a price fixed before departure.
It pays off mainly in three cases: when several students arrive on the same flight or close flights, because the price is per car; when the flight lands late and the last train is too tight; and when the family comes along on the first day with everything for a whole year. In all three, the car waits if the flight is delayed.
How do you get from Ciudad Real station to the campus?
Ciudad Real's high-speed station is on the east side of the city, and the university campus is within the city itself, at a distance you can walk without luggage. With bags, there is a taxi rank outside the station and city buses linking it with the centre. Ciudad Real is a flat, easy-going city, and most student flats are a short walk from the faculties.
If your residence or flat is in another town in the province, such as Miguelturra, right next to Ciudad Real, the last stretch changes: the transfer from the airport drops you straight there, while from the station you have to combine with an intercity bus or a taxi.
And if the flight lands at night?
A flight landing at ten at night no longer fits the last train to Ciudad Real once you add the commuter train and the change at Atocha. The options are the usual ones: sleep in Madrid and take the first morning AVE, or book the transfer for that night and arrive directly. If your residence closes reception at a set time, tell them the car's arrival time, which is the one you will have confirmed.
With your flight number in the booking, the transfer tracks the arrival and adjusts to a delay without you having to call anyone from the baggage belt. Someone else can book it in your name, as many families do from the home country.
