Valdepeñas, Manzanares and La Solana: to Madrid and Barajas with the Ciudad Real AVE or by car on the A-4, and the wine route

Valdepeñas and Manzanares sit on the A-4 and have conventional railway stations, but no high-speed one: the nearest AVE leaves from Ciudad Real, 62 km from Valdepeñas, 55 km from Manzanares and 70 km from La Solana, and no bus reaches that station in time for the first train. Madrid can be reached on the Andalusia-line train, by bus along the A-4 or by car; for Barajas, all three mean crossing Madrid with your luggage. The transfer with a driver does the trip in one go: Valdepeñas to Barajas is 220 km, about 151 min, from 270,11 € per car. The grape harvest, from late August to October, is when most people make the trip the other way: from Madrid to the wineries of Valdepeñas.

What trains serve Valdepeñas and Manzanares, and why is the AVE caught in Ciudad Real?

Valdepeñas and Manzanares have stations on the conventional line running down from Madrid towards Alcázar de San Juan, Jaén and Córdoba, with regional trains that stop at both and reach Atocha or Chamartín in around two hours. It is a useful train for going to Madrid with time to spare and little luggage, and it is the one many students and workers from the area use on Sunday afternoons. What it lacks is frequency: few trains run each day, none in the small hours, and the last one back leaves Madrid in mid-afternoon, so a meeting that ends at seven or an evening show is no longer covered by it. La Solana has no station and its nearest train is the one at Manzanares.

High-speed rail runs elsewhere: the Madrid–Seville line crosses the province through Ciudad Real and Puertollano, not along the A-4. For all three towns the AVE station is Ciudad Real, with Avant and long-distance trains that reach Atocha in under an hour. From Valdepeñas it is 62 km and about 51 min along the Almagro road or via the A-4 and the A-43; from Manzanares, 55 km on the A-43; from La Solana, 70 km through Manzanares. The bus between these towns and the capital runs on a weekday timetable and its first arrival comes after the first Avant trains have left, so the connection with the morning train is made by car, your own or with a driver, with the train time as the reference for pickup.

What is the trip to Madrid on the A-4 like and what bus is there?

The A-4 is this area's advantage: from Valdepeñas and Manzanares the motorway runs straight up to Madrid through Puerto Lápice, Madridejos and Ocaña, without a single change of road until the capital's southern entry, and La Solana joins it at Manzanares. By car it is 205 km to the centre of Madrid from Valdepeñas and 177 km from Manzanares. The stretch that varies is the last one: beyond Ocaña, the A-4 entry gets heavy in the morning rush hour and on Sunday afternoons, and the R-4 toll road is the alternative when you have to reach Barajas with little time to spare. For the airport you skirt Madrid on the M-40 or M-50 without entering the city.

The same motorway carries the long-distance buses between Madrid and Andalusia, which stop in Valdepeñas and Manzanares and arrive at Madrid's Estación Sur in Méndez Álvaro. It is the cheapest option for one person and has more departures than the conventional train, but it leaves you in the south of Madrid: for Barajas you continue by metro with changes or by Cercanías to T4, and the whole trip from the stop in your town easily passes three and a half hours. La Solana depends on the few lines that stop in the town or on getting to Manzanares to catch the A-4 bus, which adds another leg and another wait to the journey.

When is the door-to-door transfer with a driver worth it?

When the destination is Barajas and the flight leaves in the morning, the transfer is almost the only way to avoid sleeping in Madrid: neither the conventional train nor the AVE from Ciudad Real arrives in time for an early boarding, and the night bus means crossing Madrid in the small hours with your luggage. From Valdepeñas it is 220 km and about 151 min; from Manzanares, 192 km and from 240,15 €; from La Solana, from 255,10 €. The price is fixed before booking and per car, so split between three or four travellers it comes in below the sum of train tickets plus Cercanías.

For going to central Madrid for paperwork or a medical appointment, the sums are different: one person with a free morning travels well on the regional train or the bus, and the transfer makes sense when the time does not fit them, when you come back at night, or when you are going to Atocha to continue on another train. Valdepeñas to Atocha costs from 245,66 €, and it is booked with the time of the train you want to catch there, not a rough hour. On the way back from Barajas, the driver waits in arrivals with the traveller's name on a sign and follows the flight on the board, so a delay does not change the price or leave anyone working out how to get back to La Solana at midnight.

What does the Valdepeñas wine route offer visitors from outside?

Valdepeñas is a wine town with its own designation of origin, one of the oldest in Spain, and its old quarter is full of wineries: large houses with guided tours and tastings, cooperatives, old cellars beneath the houses on Calle Real, and the municipal Wine Museum, housed in a twentieth-century winery. A few kilometres away, Manzanares and La Solana have their own wineries and cooperatives, and across the whole area the vineyards reach right up to the motorway. From late August to October the harvest fills the lanes with trailers, and in early September Valdepeñas holds its Grape Harvest Festival, with grape treading, the wine fountain and events in the Plaza de España; each year's exact dates are published by the town council.

For a visitor from Madrid, a winery weekend works in two pieces: the AVE to Ciudad Real and the transfer to Valdepeñas, 62 km, or the car with a driver straight from Madrid along the A-4, which drops you at the door of the first winery. What does not work is driving after the tastings: anyone who visits three wineries in a morning should not get back behind the wheel, which is why group visits are organised with a driver who waits or collects at the agreed time at each winery. Outside the harvest, the route combines with Almagro and its Corral de Comedias, 38 km from Valdepeñas, or with the Lagunas de Ruidera, 67 km away.

How do you travel with luggage or as a group from these towns?

Luggage is what decides between train and car in this area. One large suitcase and one carry-on fit on the regional train, but they have to be lifted on and off at the town station, at Atocha and again on the Cercanías to T4, and the platforms at Valdepeñas and Manzanares do not have the help of a big station. With two suitcases per person, or with cases of wine from the wineries, the public transport trip turns into a house move. When booking the transfer you state how many people and how many bags are travelling, so the car is the right one and nobody arrives at Barajas with a suitcase on their knees.

Groups have their own logic: a family of four flying from Barajas, a supporters' club going to a match in Madrid, or a Manzanares company taking clients to a winery. The transfer price is per car, so the fuller it goes the less each person pays, and a larger group is booked as several cars with the same pickup time. Companies can ask for an invoice for each service or open a company account with a monthly invoice; how that works, what details are needed and how a booking is cancelled or changed is explained in the platform's help pages, with no small print.

How do I reach Ciudad Real AVE station from La Solana for the first train?

By car: the bus does not arrive in time. It is 70 km through Manzanares and the A-43, from 98,02 €. When booking, give the train time and the driver sets the pickup with a margin.

Can you visit several Valdepeñas wineries with the same driver?

Yes. It is booked as one service with stops or with waiting time, with the pickup time at each winery, and the exact price comes from the calculator with the full route. Nobody in the group has to drive after the tastings.

When is the Valdepeñas Grape Harvest Festival?

In early September, as the harvest begins; each year's programme and dates are published by Valdepeñas town council. On those days it pays to book the return in advance, because transfers from Madrid and Ciudad Real pile up on the same weekend.
